I have changed the cabin air filter in my 2016 GTI.

That’s right, it only took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to open the cover for the filter. That should take about 10 seconds. The FSM helpfully says push down and out, and I only half-broke a plastic tab when trying to figure out what physical combination actually made it move in that direction. As with all such things, next time should be super simple, now that I’ve done it once. At least I didn’t struggle to get the glovebox in the service position.

I’m still waiting for RockAuto to deliver the engine air filter that was supposed to arrive on Friday. I’d like to think that replacing that will be even easier, but I’m not going to over-estimate my abilities.

Replacing the FiST’s cabin filter required removing part of the center console.

It’s a mild pain in my S60, remove a panel, then remove four screws, two of which require some contortion to get to. My S40 just had it held in with a plastic clip that was way easier to deal with.

By contrast the engine air filter in the S60 is super easy, just remove a sensor cable to unclip and then some easy plastic latches.

Crushing the new filter is actually part of the manual’s process for changing the cabin air filter. It was 100% an afterthought. That’s after removing the console.

On a european Ford you usually have to remove the clutch pedal.
